When you eat seafood, you start to feel better. Even the most adventurous eater might not have an appetite for everything that comes from the sea, but that said, you should eat more of it! Here is a look at some of the health benefits of seafood.
Heart Healthy
Did you know that seafood is good for your heart? It lowers the chances of suffering heart attacks and strokes. It also helps lower blood pressure and can also help alleviate symptoms associated with depression. The secret ingredient in seafood’s power is known simply as omega-3 or fatty acids. Some of the fishes you should look to eat more regularly include salmon, tuna, sardines, trout, mackerel, and herring. However, how you prepare the seafood dishes you wish to enjoy matters – pan frying or deep frying eliminates these nutrients.
Protein
Another benefit of eating seafood? More protein intake. While it is possible to get protein from meat, seafood has higher levels of it. There isn’t very much saturated-fat in it, and it is loaded with vitamin E, an antioxidant that is important for improving your overall well-being. You also get more calcium and, depending on how you cook the fish, smaller calorie counts.
Cholesterol Concerns
Not all cholesterol is bad! You do need regular levels of good cholesterol while regulating or reducing the bad cholesterol in your system. There is plenty of healthy cholesterol in shellfish, too! That’s why it’s important to add more to your diet!
Mercury Concerns
Mercury is often found in many different species of fish. It can affect many different fishes and of course, humans. Shark, swordfish, and marlin are the most exotic and edible types of fish. It’s a rare treat that you will be able to find and enjoy them. This will limit your exposure to mercury. Pregnant women and small children are advised to stay away from it.
