Crabs make a delicious meal for any occasion. Sometimes, you might be curious how they can be elevated beyond the typical crab feast that includes mallets, newspapers, bibs, and plenty of ice-cold beer. Why not give some wine a try? Here are some excellent suggestions for pairing them up at your next gathering, even if it is still a few months away from right now.
Chardonnay
Chardonnay is crisp, clean, and has notes of butteriness to it – a nice complement to the delicate sweetness of crab meat, no matter which type of crab you are consuming. Plus, if you plan on having your crabs soused in melted butter, then this is the perfect pairing for that idea. Choose lightly oaked or unoaked chardonnay so that the wine doesn’t overpower the crab. Pair with Dungeness, steamed, baked, baked crab cakes, and softshell crabs.
Riesling
Riesling is a sweet and refreshing white wine that is perfect for the warmer days of spring and summer. When you want to serve warm crab, then pick riesling to go with it. It’s great for spicy deep-fried crab cakes, crab dipped in mayo, spicy roasted crab, and a spicy crab boil.
Sauv Blanc
Sauvignon blanc is a fantastic complement to many different types of shellfish. Crabs are no exception! Despite the zest and kick of sauvignon blanc, it is still a tasty combination. Try it with steamed crab, deep-fried crab cakes, crab salad, and crab risotto.
Viognier
Unlike the other wines on this list, you might not have heard of viognier before. It is creamy, sweet, and spicy all at the same time. Lay on the butter, cream, and cheese as thick as you like, because they make superb combinations of flavor that way. Crabmeat in white sauce, crab cakes straight up, and steamed crabs with butter sauce are some meal ideas that you can try with this exotic wine.
