It shouldn’t surprise you that seafood is one of the most popular types of cuisine all over the world. Every country and every culture cherishes recipes involving fish, shrimp, crabs, and other examples of the bounty of the sea. The official start of fall is only a few weeks away, and while there are soups perfect for spring and summer, there’s no denying that fall and winter are the height of the soup season. Here now is a brief look at several varieties of seafood soups.
Cioppino
This type of seafood soup hails from San Francisco. It was originally innovated in the late 1800s and is actually closer to a stew than a true soup. Shrimp and clams feature in this soup which is a cousin of both the French bouillabaisse and eastern European brudet.
Autumn Bouillabaisse
Speaking of bouillabaisse, let’s focus on it now. Believe it or not, you can incorporate pumpkins in this thick fisherman’s stew to give it an autumn flavor. Other ingredients include halibut, shrimp, and scallops. Turmeric and tomatoes are also essential ingredients, as are fennel, parsley, and lemon.
Clam Chowder/Salmon Chowder
Clam chowder is a beloved classic, whether it reaches your taste buds from a restaurant table or a colorful can. Clams, bacon, potatoes, and a creamy stock all come together to create something magical. Not fond of clams? That’s okay, just substitute salmon in their place. Plus, you’ll get more omega-3s in your diet when you do.
Crawfish Stew/Creole Fish Stew
Ah yes, the humble crawfish. Cinnamon and star anise will take this stew up a notch. Fresh herbs and tabasco sauce can also add another dimension of flavor; either way, it’s all delicious. For the creole fish stew, all you need is a roux, classic cajun seasonings, white fish, clams, crawfish, and spicy sausage. Pairing it with crusty bread and sweet white wine will help tone down some of the heat.
Mediterranean Fish Stew
Seafood soups come to your dinner from all over the world. This stew includes chard, tilapia, and shrimp. Fennel fronds and slices of bread help complete a meal that is easy to make in less than half an hour.
Kale-and-Potato Seafood Soup
When you are looking for something to eat, you might be spoiled for choice. Seafood soups have a wide variety of fillings, and kale and potatoes can help make the soup even heartier. Halibut, scallops, new potatoes, and sliced up kale can be a tasty way to enjoy all of these fantastic ingredients all at once!
