It’s no secret that the best crab cakes are made with love. And how can you show that love? By only using the best ingredients, of course! Here at Costas Inn, we pride ourselves on using the freshest ingredients and most intriguing seasonings on all of our menu items. We want to tempt you to keep coming back – our repeat customers mean the world to us. Even if you’re just ordering to-go for curbside service, we’ll be glad to serve you. Here are some more ideas for jazzing up your next tray of crab cakes!
Switch #5: Hummus
When the humble chickpea is blended together with tahini, lemon juice, and some magic, you get creamy and delicious hummus! Other core ingredients include garlic and olive oil. Plus, you’ll get more fiber and protein in your meal when you use this alternative instead of mayo. It’s also worth noting that you’ll consume fewer calories when you make this switch.
Switch #6: Olive Oil
Yes, we know that there are brands of mayo out there that boast a mixture of olive oil or avocado oil. These concoctions are intended to make mayonnaise a little more flavorful since it can be rather bland on its own. But mayo should already contain olive oil; without that, it wouldn’t taste the same. Olive oil contains a higher concentration of healthy fats. Just be sure to use this liquid in moderation – otherwise, you might affect the texture in unpleasant ways!
Switch #7: Mustard
Mustard is another possible substitute for mayonnaise. It tastes great, and amazingly, has virtually no fat content! Honey mustard and brown mustard offer up tasty spins on this type of crab cake binder. However, they are also higher in sodium levels.
Switch #8: Cottage Cheese
At first, using cottage cheese to hold a crab cake together sounds downright bizarre. It’s up there with using cottage cheese in lasagna instead of ricotta or putting it on spaghetti instead of parmesan. But trust us, it can surprise you. Low-fat cottage cheese is remarkably similar to mayo’s flavor profile – but it’s a healthier alternative. You can also use this dairy-based contender in tuna salads or dips.
Switch #9: Avocado Mash
Last but not least, we have mashed avocado. The creamy texture of ripe avocados will delight your taste buds with its excellent mouthfeel. Besides, there are fewer calories to worry about when you eat an avocado. Another benefit you may not know about? Avocado mash gives you more fiber and vitamins than plain old mayonnaise spread can. Just be sure to add in some olive oil; that way, pouring or spreading the mash is much easier.
