BALTIMORE (WBFF) — What’s better than raising money and awareness for charities across Maryland? How about doing it with some crab cakes and crab soup?
Crabbers have been commercially catching blue crabs (also known as Maryland crabs) from the Chesapeake Bay since the mid 19th century. Today, summertime means heading to your favorite crab house or seafood market to tuck into steamed crab, crab cakes and crab soup made from these Chesapeake Bay crustaceans. Steamed crabs, arguably the most popular preparation, typically get cooked in plenty of Old Bay Seasoning and are best served with a pitcher of cold beer.
The Chesapeake Bay may give us a bumper crop of crabs this year.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources found a 35-percent increase in the blue crab population this year, or about 550 million crabs. That’s the fourth highest level in 20 years. They say good weather and restrictions on the harvest in the past have led to the increase.
On Friday, October 28th, Costas Inn was featured on Michael Symon’s show, Burgers, Brew and Que. Check out our first appearance on the Food Network!
Costas Inn has its own take on seasoning for steamed crabs: they don’t just throw a bunch of Old Bay and black pepper on them. It has a distinct sweetness to it – perhaps some toasted onion in there. It’s beloved by celebrities and food authors, including David Rosengarten and the folks on the Today show.
Costas Inn is a Baltimore institution. In operation since 1971, this enormous, no-frills establishment somehow manages to feel homey and comfortable at the same time. People come to eat at Costas from all over the world thanks to several TV appearances featuring their famous crabs.

Costas Inn has a menu that would shame most diners. The wide variety of items on it range from breakfast to pit beef with every other dinner item you could think of in between. That’s great but we only go for one thing: the steamed crabs.

Sitting among a sea of fast-food joints and car-repair shops with no water in sight, Costas Inn might not match many people’s vision of a world-class crabhouse. Until they walk inside. The perma-smell of crab spice in the large, open dining room, the drumbeat of mallets hitting shells and empty shells hitting buckets, autographed Brooks Robinson and Johnny Unitas memorabilia on the front wall—all instantly authenticate the place. Crab lovers have been stamping their sign of approval on Costas’s brown-paper-covered tables for more than 40 years.

Known for classic steamed-crab-and-mallet suppers, Costas Inn (4100 North Point Blvd., Dundalk, 410-477-1975) also has a thing for crab imperial—a heap of crab slathered in creamy white sauce offered atop shrimp, orange roughy, the fish du jour, or even on its own.
