Everyone who has ever heard the word “Maryland” knows that Marylanders absolutely love steamed crabs. However, how did steamed crabs become such a Maryland tradition? Why do Marylanders prefer their crabs served steamed instead of any other way?
The Flavor is Irresistible
Boiling is the most traditional way of cooking crabs, but it doesn’t offer the most in terms of crabby flavor. When boiling crabs, all of the delicious juices and flavors get sucked into the water. Steamed crabs are a Maryland favorite because all of the crabby flavor stays inside of the shell, instead of being wasted in the water. If you love the taste of real Maryland crab and don’t like a watered down mess, always choose steamed crabs over boiled crabs.
It’s a Party
One of the biggest social events that Marylanders love hosting and attending over the course of the summer is the crab feast. Everyone gathers together with mallets and plenty of napkins to dig into a massive pile of steamed crabs. While some people might think of eating piles of seafood as a weird way to spend a summer afternoon, it’s no different than Thanksgiving! Marylanders love using crab parties as a way to get together with friends and family, enjoy delicious food at the peak of the season, and spend time outdoors. We are so proud of our area and our Bay, and enjoying steamed crabs while the warm sunny breeze blows is one of the best ways to enjoy all that Maryland has to offer.
