In Maryland, many would consider seafood to be a way of life. This is especially true during the summer months. Whether you are steaming crabs or grilling some fish, there are a lot of different ways to prepare seafood. Let’s go over just a few different cooking methods to inspire you for your next seafood meal!
Pan Searing
Pan searing seafood on the stove is a method that works great when it comes to cooking fish steaks and thick, short fillets of fish. To pan sear a fish, begin by heating a well-seasoned skillet over medium-high heat. When the pan is warm, add a teaspoon of oil and swirl it around to coat the pan. When the pan begins to smoke, place your seafood in the pan and turn it periodically, so it cooks evenly. When the fish is done, its color will be opaque, and it will flake off-for exact accuracy, however, ensure the fish is cooked to 140 degrees.
Steaming
Steaming seafood is a good cooking method when it comes to keeping a food’s natural moisture, and helping reduce the amount of fat. Steaming is a good choice for delicate seafood because of the protection and distance between the food and heat source. Steamers are sold in stores, and they can also be made. To steam seafood, find a deep and wide pot and fill it with two inches of water or cooking liquid and let it come to a simmer. When it does, place your steamer on top of the pot and cover.
Grilling
Grilling is a cooking method that can add a new dynamic of taste to your seafood. Grilling tends to give a smokey flavor as well a crisp texture that can be enjoyable to eat. Some fish, like flakier fish, or skinless fillets should not be cooked on the grill unless you are using a grill basket. Prepare your seafood for grilling by spraying both sides of it with vegetable or olive oil, season your seafood to taste or marinate it. The cook time should be around 10 minutes for your seafood to cook.
