One of the many benefits of living in the Maryland area is the access to fresh, high-quality seafood from our own shores. Luckily, all these delicious fish are also extremely good for you! In fact, it’s estimated that very few Americans are eating enough fish, Marylanders included. There are plenty of reasons to increase the amount of fish you eat and we’ll run you through our top five here.
Fish Is Full Of Nutrients
In general, all types of fish are good for you, but fatty fish is particularly useful. Fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel all have higher fat contents, which means they store more essential nutrients. Iodine, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and easily digestible protein are all found in fish, but particularly fatty ones. High vitamin D content is particularly important as most are deficient in it.
Low Risk Of Heart Attack
Thanks to the high omega-3 content and the wealth of health benefits, eating fish regularly leads to an overall healthier heart. One study found that one serving of fish a week could lower the risk of heart disease by approximately 15%.
Great For Development
Studies have found that omega-3 fatty acid and the docosahexaenoic acid are both critical to the development of the eyes and brain. Getting enough of these is crucial for pregnant mothers and fish is a great, light source of both. However, it’s important to note that some types may have levels of mercury that can be dangerous to brain development and should be avoided.
Decrease Age-Related Deterioration
As the body ages, the brain often slows down and begins to show signs of decline. In many cases this is normal, but in others, dementia can be caused by neuro-degenerative issues. Because regular consumption of fish has been linked to higher proportions of the gray matter, it is thought that eating it may help prevent mental decline.
Improved Mood
While it isn’t discussed nearly as much as heart disease, depression is one of the worlds leading health crisis. Some studies have shown that increasing the intake of omega-3 fatty acids has a beneficial effect in fighting depression.
