Crabs, fish, and other seafood are plentiful in the Maryland area, so it’s no wonder why they’re such a big part of local cuisine. Between the many health benefits of including seafood in a balanced diet and the delicious variety of seafood cuisine on the coast, you really can’t go wrong! But with all the healthful benefits and interesting facts about seafood there are, there are also some common misunderstanding. Here are 3 of the most common seafood myths.
Seafood is Full of Mercury
Many people believe that seafood is full of mercury and should be avoided to prevent health concerns. While some areas of the world are impacted by high concentrations of mercury that affect the fish and shellfish, there’s still plenty of healthy seafood out there! In fact, many types of seafood, including mussels and several types of fish, are great sources of selenium. Selenium is an essential mineral that actually counteracts mercury toxicity and has many health benefits of its own!
Seafood is Radioactive
On the contrary, seafood is totally safe! Many of your regular activities may expose you to higher levels of radiation than eating seafood. Mammograms and X-rays, as well as riding on airplanes, expose you to far more radiation than a serving of seafood. In some cases, food like bananas may actually contain more radiation than a serving of fish. To put it simply, the FDA recommends you stay below 1 mSV of radiation exposure per year, and all these activities and foods represent a small fraction of that exposure.
Seafood is Difficult to Cook
It is an incredibly common misunderstanding that seafood is difficult to cook. This myth leads many people to believe that you can’t find delicious, well-prepared seafood. While fish cooks more quickly than most meats, a seasoned cook will know when it’s ready to avoid overcooking. Plus, it can be very simple to season and dress a seafood dish due to the natural, fresh flavor of seafood that makes it some of the most craveable cuisine out there.
