Spring and summer are here and that means time with family sipping sweet tea on the porch, relaxing on the deck after a long day at work, and grilling up delicious treats with the whole family. In Maryland, spring means one thing—crab cakes! Here are some of our favorite sauces to try with crab cakes this spring.
Russian Dressing
Russian dressing is popular on everything from sandwiches to crab cakes thanks to its cool creamy flavor. To make your own Russian dressing, combine one tablespoon chopped onion, one cup of mayonnaise, ¼ cup of ketchup, 4 teaspoons bottled horseradish, 1 teaspoon hot sauce, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika, and a dash of salt. Once everything is mixed together, you can use this sauce to add some spicy flavor to crab cakes served by themselves or on a sandwich.
Mango Puree
Mango puree is incredibly easy to make and a very unique sauce to try with crab cakes. If you want to incorporate Asian flavors into your crab cakes, this is the perfect side accompaniment. To make mango puree, blend a ripe mango with one tablespoon of chili oil and 1 teaspoon of chili sauce until smooth. This sauce offers a nice kick of heat in addition to the bright sweetness of the mango.
Chipotle Mayonnaise
This sauce is very popular on just about everything you can think of, including jumbo lump crab cakes. To make this unique and smoky accompaniment, use ¾ of a cup of mayonnaise, 1 chipotle chile in adobo sauce (seeded and minced), 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of Old Bay, 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. After combining all of these, you can use this spread to dip crab cakes in, spread it on a bun for a crab cake sandwich, or serve it with various seafood options as a universal complement.
