It’s no secret that seafood is a significant part of the food tradition in this area, specifically crabs and, even more specifically, blue crabs. We certainly love our beautiful swimmers, especially when steamed, served hot, and paired with old bay. Consider these four seafood side dish ideas if you’re mixing up the seafood menu and serving crab legs at your next event.
Dippers
Since crab legs are a different crab than blue crab, the experience of eating them often includes more dipping options (partly because the more substantial leg meat chunks are easier to dip). Consider serving melted clarified butter, or mix things up with another dipping sauce, like ketchup, cocktail sauce, a Worcestershire and mayo mix, or even lemon wedges to squeeze on the meat.
Biscuits
Biscuits are a popular side for crab legs, especially cheesy biscuits. Whether they’re made from scratch or premixed, they add something tasty and substantial to break up the work of cracking open crabs.
Salad
For many people, salad is the perfect summer side dish to serve with crab legs. The salad offers some healthy veggies without adding extra work to the meal prep. They are also light and won’t suffer from sitting out on the table during the long experience of cracking crabs. If fresh salad isn’t your style, pasta and potato salads are great alternatives.
Corn
There’s a reason this is the traditional side – it is easy to cook alongside the crabs, it is a delicious summer staple, and it loves that butter you’ve got lying around. Corn is even good slathered in crab seasoning, complementing the flavor of crab legs very well!
