Here at Costas Inn, we’re famous for serving up awesome steamed crabs. These wonders are Baltimore-style, even if they don’t always come from our neck of the woods. In fact, we’re going to boldly claim that we have the very best steamed crabs in all of Baltimore, inside city limits or out! As good as these expertly-cooked crabs are on their own, they’re going to need some tag team partners before they can pin your tastebuds. What are we talking about? Some fantastic side dishes to go with them, of course!
Cajun-Style Sides
No matter which part of the country you’re from, odds are you’re plenty familiar with the concept of fusion food. Honestly, from a certain point of view, all American cuisine is, to some degree, considered fusion. Cajun, or New Orleans, style sides are widely popular from Louisiana east to Florida. Dirty rice, Boudain sausage, smoked pork sausages, hush puppies, and green salads are all wonderful ideas to kick your meal up a notch.
Atlantic-Style Sides
Now then, let’s talk about excellent seafood pairings from a little closer to home. Atlantic-style sides should be relatively more familiar. After all, they are east coast faves from up as far north as Maine, and again, as far down south as Florida. Across all of these states, steamed crabs can be part of a complete breakfast, a lunchtime marvel, or a delicious dinner. Baltimore and the Chesapeake don’t have the only bragging rights, although we’re willing to say that, yes, Baltimore-style steamed crabs reign supreme. Corn on the cob, red potatoes, coleslaw, and potato salad all join in on the fun. Plus, you can’t forget about soups. We’re heading into October, and that means the soup-and-stew season is officially on the table. Two excellent suggestions are to make up a pot of clam chowder or cioppino. Want something a bit lighter? Garden salads, steamed broccoli, and roasted asparagus are super yummy as well.
