For those who love a good beer, we’ve already covered what you should try drinking when you’re feasting on crabs. But wine is another matter entirely! Wine is finicky, and when paired incorrectly, it can ruin a meal. It’s more complicated than saying white wine goes with seafood and rose goes with dessert. Learn how to pair wine like an expert with Costas Inn!
The General Rule
Always remember that it’s difficult to incorrectly pair wine as long as you keep to a few simple rules. The first is to choose a white wine. You don’t want anything too heavy, as crab is already a very rich meat. Ideally, it should be crisp; some consider Chardonnay to be a great choice, but that’s up to you. What’s important is that you’re savoring the flavors of the crab.
With or Without Butter?
Butter, surprisingly, changes the perspective. If you’re one to dip your crab leg in copious amounts of melted butter, your wine selection should be counteracting the fat. Therefore, look for a wine with a quick zing of lemon, and never anything sweet. A good choice would be Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio, which we serve at Costas Inn. The mineral taste is perfect for crab.
Is Chardonnay Too Much?
It depends, again, on the buttery aspect. Chardonnay is perfect for rounding out those spicy tastes of Old Bay. It may seem too rich to pair with a heavy seafood like crab, but it all depends on whether or not you’re lightening the load with butter or not. In the end, the decision is up to you. Though, we will recommend off our menu the Rosemount Traminer Riesling. Riesling is considered to be one of the best wines for pairing with crab. The light yet zingy taste tends to be a great compliment for the meat, which is rich in minerals.
