The game was one of the most exciting that U.S. soccer fans have seen in years, with Tim Howard saving 16 goals in one of the games of his career, and 19-year old Julian Green giving the U.S. hope with a late goal in extra time that put them within reach of a tie and sending the game into a penalty. They put up a valiant effort, but in the end the United States simply couldn’t keep up with Belgium, losing 1-2 in extra time. It wasn’t meant to be, but this World Cup will go down as one of the most exciting in recent history for the U.S., and the fact that they made it out of the so-called “Group of Death” with Germany, Portugal and Ghana says a lot about a team that is making a name for itself on the national stage.
While the U.S. are out, there’s plenty of great soccer left to be played in Brazil, and we’ll be watching every game here at Costas Inn in Baltimore. Tomorrow, Germany take on France at noon in a quarterfinal meetup of European juggernauts. Germany are the favorites, but not by much, and a young French team could surprise the Germans in what is sure to be a thrilling match. That match will be followed by the host country Brazil against a Columbian team which has dominated their competition. Brazil are still the overall favorites to win the tournament, and haven’t lost a match at home since 2002, but they struggled to get by Chile and are sure to face tough competition from a Columbian team seeking to knock off their South American rivals. And that’s just Friday. Make sure to join us on Saturday at noon for Belgium and Argentina, and watch the player who is far and away one of the best, if not the best, in the world, Lionel Messi. Then at 4, the powerhouse Netherlands take on the indomitable Costa Rican team, an underdog who surprised everyone by winning a group that featured England, Italy, and Uruguay. Great soccer is in store for us this weekend. Pair it with great food and great company at Costas Inn in Baltimore for a winner every time!
