At Costas Inn, eating and cooking crabs is a year-long tradition for us. As you might know, different kinds of crab meat are available. It can be a bit confusing with the many other types of crab meat available, especially if you’re trying to prepare your own crab feast. In this week’s blog, here are a few helpful pointers to help you distinguish between king and snow crabs!
What to Know About Snow Crabs
Snow crabs are not hard to open. They’ve got a thinner shell, so scooping out meat isn’t that hard. You will notice that the meat is sweeter and milder, with legs in a cluster. Snow crabs are far more plentiful, which makes them affordable and suitable for a bigger group or party.
What to Know About King Crabs
Meanwhile, king crab shells have a bit of a prickly surface. For one thing, it makes them more challenging to hold. One other thing you will need is seafood crackers to break open shells. Pulling them apart with your hands is very difficult and won’t work most of the time. Once you finally extract the meat, it is firm enough to come out all in one piece. Because king crabs have enormous legs, you are likely to only get one at a time in some restaurants.
The Similarities
Both types of crab produce tender and flavorful meat, which you will enjoy. Look for them at your local seafood market or grocery store, and if you can not find them there, try ordering them online from reputable stores you know you can count on. You could also stop by Costas Inn for all of your crab cravings.
The Differences
Now, we can talk about how these crabs are special. The factors that set them apart include the size of the crabs, their texture, costs, and the habitat in which the crabs were caught, which also play a role.
