There’s no doubt about it: steamed shrimp is delicious. Whether you get it steamed from the grocery store to make shrimp salad or you want to visit your seafood destination for some curbside pickup, it’s time to get your shrimp fix. Here’s a guide to steaming, especially if you’ve never done it before.
Start with High-Quality Shrimp
What you will want to do is pick high-quality shrimp. Frozen shrimp is the best choice for this, as counterintuitive as that sounds. This is better than choosing shrimp that is considered fresh, though you can certainly pick that as well!
Quick-Thawing Techniques
It’s easy to thaw shrimp quickly. The only things you need are the colander, a large bowl, and some cool water. Take the shrimp out of the package and put it in the colander. Fill the bowl with cool water and submerge the shrimp. Repeat as needed and be sure to pat dry before you’re ready to cook the shrimp. When the shrimp is firm and flexible, you know it is properly thawed. So if it doesn’t resist when you poke and prod it, then it is good to go.
Time to Steam
The first step is to bring half a pot of water to a rapid boil. Season the shrimp while it is still dry. Just toss it in the seasoning of your choice – especially if it is the house blend from Costas Inn! If you don’t have much on hand, then salt, pepper, and garlic is a good choice. Pull out the steamer basket. Colanders and mesh strainers work too. After the water is boiling, it’s time to move on. Put the steamer implement of your choice above the water and add the shrimp. Make sure the shrimp isn’t in the water just yet. Steam it all for about five or six minutes. Toss it halfway through to make sure all of it is cooked evenly. Once you’re done, you can serve while still hot or let it cool down. You can also serve it chilled if you want to!
