Are you getting enough heart healthy, brain developing fish in your diet? If you’re not following the dietary recommended 2-3 servings of fish a week, the answer is probably not. Most Americans do not get enough fish in their diets. That’s a trend we hope changes. Costa’s Inn makes it easy, with nutritious and delicious seafood meals served seven days a week.
Recommended Servings
Americans are familiar with the idea of cutting back on many food types, but seafood is one area where you’re more than encouraged to splurge. On average, we eat about one serving of seafood a week, and that’s a generous estimate. But, the recommended serving puts seafood consumption at two to three servings a week or more. This average is especially important for children, whose developing brains are even more in need of the nutrients fish can provide.
The Benefits of Seafood
Seafood, is the general term used for shellfish and fish, is regarded to be significantly lower in calories and saturated fat than other protein sources. It is also full of a variety of nutrients including omega three, six, and nine fatty acids, vitamins b12 and D as well as zinc, iron, phosphorus, selenium, and magnesium. All of these are shown to be great for the heart and brain and especially useful for those with heart disease.
Choosing The Right Fish
All commercially sold seafood is perfectly safe to eat which means anything you can find in restaurants or grocery stores is fair game. The five most common types of fish consumed include shrimp, canned tuna, Alaskan pollock, salmon, and tilapia. Fortunately, here in Maryland, we have plenty of other options such as oysters, flounder, our famous blue crabs.
