Seafood is incredibly versatile. There are many different types that offer unique flavor profiles, textures, and cooking techniques. Although many people amp up the amount of seafood they eat in the summer, it’s a great addition to any meal throughout the year. Check out these general seafood tips for enjoying the many delicacies of the sea.
Buying and Storing Seafood
When buying seafood, it’s important that you are purchasing the items from reputable sources. Seafood that isn’t handled properly and with care can make you ill. Therefore, it must be handled properly so that it can later be safely consumed and enjoyed. While you’re shopping, seafood should be the last on your list as it needs to be kept cold. Use a cooler in your car for those trips to the grocery store when you’re buying seafood items. When you purchase seafood items, they should typically have a light smell reminiscent of the sea or ocean. Strong fish odors and discoloration, however, are usually signs that the fish is not as fresh as it should be. Once you get the seafood items home, they should be immediately stored in leak-proof containers. Seafood can be kept in your refrigerator for up to two days, and in your freezer for up to 10 months.
Cooking Seafood
There are many different techniques and methods for preparing seafood. When handling seafood at home, it’s important that you take the necessary steps not to cross-contaminate any of your surfaces or cooking utensils. Be sure to thaw and marinate seafood in the refrigerator and not at room temperature. When cooking scale and shellfish, you’ll know that it’s done when the flesh becomes opaque and firm. There are also raw seafood preparations, which include ceviche and sushi. Those dishes should be carefully prepared to ensure that fish is safe and healthy to eat.
